# How to send a fax without a fax machine You don't need a fax machine, a phone line or a subscription to send a fax. Here's how online faxing works and what you need to have ready. October 16, 2026 · 3 min read · https://faxies.com/blog/send-a-fax-without-a-fax-machine The IRS, a doctor's office, an insurer, a bank, a court: plenty of offices still ask for documents by fax. If you don't have a fax machine, you don't need to buy one. An online fax service sends your document to their fax machine for you, and they get a normal fax. ## How online faxing works You add your document on a website. The service turns it into fax pages, calls the recipient's fax machine over the phone network and sends the pages, just as a fax machine would. When the call ends, it tells you whether the pages went through. You don't need a phone line, a printer or a scanner. A phone or a computer with a web browser is enough. ## What to have ready - **The recipient's fax number,** with its area code. It's usually on the form, the letter or the website that asked you to fax. US and Canadian numbers have 10 digits. - **Your document.** A PDF works best. A clear photo of each page works too. - **A card and an email address.** The card pays for the fax, and the email gets the fax's status and its receipt. ## Send it with Faxies Open [Send a fax](https://faxies.com/send). You don't need an account, and nothing is sent or charged until the last step. 1. **Recipient.** Type the recipient's fax number. When it looks right, we show it back to you so you can check it. 2. **Document.** Add your files: PDF, JPG or PNG, up to 10 files and 50 pages. On a phone, you can take a photo of each page. You see a preview of every page and can change their order. 3. **Cover page.** Add one if the recipient expects it, or skip it. 4. **Review.** Check the pages and the total. 5. **Send.** Pay on Stripe's secure page and send. Without an account, we ask for your email first. Your fax's page shows where it is as it goes. Most faxes arrive in a few minutes. We email you when it's delivered. ## What it costs $2.99 for a fax of up to 25 pages, and $0.25 for each extra page. A cover page counts as a page. There's no subscription, and you see the total before you pay. We place a hold on your card and charge it only when the fax is delivered. If the line is busy or nobody answers, we try again at no extra charge. If it still doesn't go through, we release the hold and you aren't charged. If you send faxes every month, or need to receive them, a [plan](https://faxies.com/pricing) may suit you better. ## Before you press send - **Check the recipient's fax number** against the form or letter. One wrong digit sends your document to someone else. - **Check the preview.** Faxes are black and white, so colored ink and light pencil can be hard to read on the other side. - **Keep the delivery receipt.** It shows the date, the time and how many pages were delivered.
